Chip Wickham – La Sombra
Feat. Matthew Halsall
Tuesday 11th May
Saxophonist and flautist extraordinaire Chip Wickham with special guest Matthew Halsall perform original compositions from the blistering La Sombra at Archspace.
Brighton raised saxophonist and flautist Chip Wickham has spent over 25 years in the business, and he sure knows how to get a crowd going. Wickham’s smooth and emotional playing has earned him a place as a close working member with established producers such as Nightmares on Wax, Jimpster, and Graham Massey and as part of Craig Charles’ Fantasy Funk Band.
Now, with the release of his album La Sombra, Wickham is set to bring his own beautiful, wistful music to the jazz lovers of London. His new sound is testament to his heroes Roland Kirk, Yuseef Lateef & Harold McNair. Golden early Blue Note era of jazz / Impulse Records
Tonight’s concert features a special guest appearance from trumpeter and composer Matthew Halsall, a long term friend and colleague of Wickham’s, who played on Halsall’s soulful debut recording, Sending My Love on Gondwana Records. Originally from Manchester and now residing in Qatar, his varied musical knowledge has given him the diversity that takes listeners on a journey of soulful, jazz inspired sounds.
This event unifies two of UK’s true greats who have set the bar for the bubbling jazz resurgence. Don’t miss out on this night of virtuoso musicianship.
